Almost two years has passed since Hurricane Katrina changed the face of New Orleans and its residents. Many of these people are still trying to put the pieces back together and move forward with their lives.
People who have gone through a major catastrophe such as an earthquake or hurricane have an opportunity to reinvent themselves from the inside out. But many do not feel like this is an opportunity at all. Their homes were devastated and they are wondering which way to turn next.
After living through Hurricane Andrew in 1992, I
can relate to the people of New Orleans in many ways. My home was destroyed and I had few belongings left after spending almost eight hours in a tiny closet with my dog. I did not know if I was going to live through the storm and I spent many hours praying while in that closet. I now have a opportunity to go to New Orleans this summer to help out any way I can.
It will feel good to offer people hope and dignity. I will let them share their stories with me and then help them focus on just how they want to go about the business of reinventing their lives. This will be a time for them to feel the passion they have inside them and take action to make it a reality. I will guide them in any direction they choose to go.
